2-Minute Walk Test (2MWT)
The 2-minute walk test records how far someone walks in two minutes. Further is better. epnote records it in metres as a whole number.

What this measure records
Distance walked in two minutes, in metres, as a whole number. Higher is better.
It is chosen over the six-minute walk when six minutes is too long for the client, or when the space available is too small for a six-minute course.
Protocol
epnote does not hold a transcribed standardised protocol for this measure yet. The detail that matters clinically, such as chair height, arm position, counting rules and course length, is not in this repository's research, so it is not written here.
Normative values
epnote does not hold sourced normative values for this measure yet. Rather than publish a table from memory, this section is empty until the numbers are transcribed from a primary source and checked against it, the same way the change thresholds below were.
Change thresholds
A change on any measure can be the client or it can be the test. The minimal detectable change (MDC) is the smallest change larger than the measurement error. The minimal clinically important difference (MCID) is the smallest change a client would notice as worthwhile.
Only thresholds that have been read from the primary paper and checked against it appear below. Everything else is withheld.
| Population | Threshold | Value | Measured in | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Total hip arthroplasty | MDC95 | 17.56 m | Primary total hip arthroplasty | Yuksel E, Unver B, Kalkan S, Karatosun V (2020) Reliability and minimal detectable change of the 2-minute walk test and Timed Up and Go test in patients with total hip arthroplasty. | Total hip arthroplasty | SEM | 6.37 m | Primary total hip arthroplasty | Yuksel E, Unver B, Kalkan S, Karatosun V (2020) Reliability and minimal detectable change of the 2-minute walk test and Timed Up and Go test in patients with total hip arthroplasty. A threshold belongs to the population it was measured in. Check the MCID and MDC calculator to compare a client's own change against these.

Reporting this measure in a funder report
- Write the test name in full the first time, then the short form if you must.
- Write the unit in words: seconds, metres, repetitions.
- Put the change in daily life before the number.
- Give the baseline and the current value, so the reader can see the change without doing the arithmetic.
- Say how the test was done if anything about it was unusual, such as a walking aid or a different chair.

- Gait speed over a short course, when even two minutes is too much.
Questions
- Is the 2-minute walk test as valid as the 6-minute walk test?
- They measure the same idea over different durations and they are not interchangeable. Pick one and repeat it, so the baseline and the retest are the same test. epnote keeps them as separate measures for that reason.
- Can a client use a walking aid during the 2-minute walk test?
- Record what they used and keep it the same between tests. A change in the aid changes what the number means, and epnote has a note field on every test card for exactly this.
- What change on the 2-minute walk test is larger than measurement error?
- The change thresholds section on this page shows what epnote has verified, with the population and the citation. A threshold measured after hip replacement does not transfer to a different population.
